Vinyl in Advertisements

In today’s society, advertisements bombard us on a daily basis. Chances are a large portion of outdoor advertisements you see have some sort of vinyl decal applied to them. But why vinyl? Why not use a heavy plastic or metal, something a little sturdier? We’ll cover why vinyl is the most popular option for this application.

First of all, it’s important to know what vinyl is. Vinyl is defined as a synthetic resin or plastic consisting of polyvinyl chloride particularly used for covering materials. Essentially it is a very thin and versatile plastic. As we all know, plastic has a million uses and is water proof, making it ideal for outdoor use. Because of the thin nature of vinyl, it is also very flexible, yet durable which means it can easily be cut into different shapes and placed on a variety of surfaces.

If you are going to spend the money on advertisements, you want them to last a long time. Vinyl is durable, light weight, and waterproof. This means that it can withstand all types of weather for long periods of time without being damaged or worn out. Vinyl graphics are also great on vehicles for advertising purposes and can withstand the everyday wear and tear the roads and weather may throw at it.

The purpose of signs is to get recognized and remembered by potential customers. This means you need to create a sign that stands out from the crowd. The beauty about vinyl is that the design possibilities are essentially limited to your computer design skills or the number of fonts you have access to. Vinyl also comes in hundreds, if not thousands of colors and prints. If you’re working with a designer to create your sign they can help you to choose the colors, font styles, and graphics that will be best for your advertising needs. Be sure to pick something that will stick out but is still easier to read. For example, a bright green on a yellow background or even white may not be that easy to read from down the street, especially on a sunny day. Contrast is key and makes your advertising stand out more!

Vinyl itself is not adhesive. However, the vinyl decal making scientists (that’s not a technical term by the way), have seemed to come up with a few good adhesives that keep your decals sticking for years to come! Depending where you order from they may have reusable decals which I have found do not stay up as long due to their lack of stickiness, there are also permanent decals which require a heat gun and some fingernail strength to remove. There are also options in between but most sign makers have a specific brand they work with so I’d be sure to ask before ordering!

No matter what you are trying to advertise, vinyl based signs and decals are a great option. The thin, durable, lightweight material makes it ideal for a variety of applications. Keep all these things in mind and you’ll be sure to have a great advertisement coming your way!
